It was a crazy week for us as Baby E had five appointments, but we managed to survive and got all good results. Hooray! Some of you may know that I became extremely ill last week with a nasty stomach virus. As a result, I became severely dehydrated and my milk supply was extremely depleted. Consequently, poor Baby E was starving and not a happy camper. We had an emergency "milk intervention" with the pediatrician on Monday, and it turned out it was nothing that a lot of pumping, a ton of extra fluid and some herbs couldn't fix. My milk is back, and E Bug is happy once again. Plus, she got to start solids (her favorite is oatmeal) and juice this week, which has made her a VERY happy girl. I've joked that her belly is finally full for the first time in six months. Poor girl had only gained half an ounce in three weeks, but now that she's on solids, she's gained 3.5 ounces in three days. Plus, she gets to start fruits tomorrow... we can't wait to see how much she likes them! She literally squeals with excitement while she eats.
On Tuesday morning, E underwent a renal sonogram and later that day she saw the urologist. You may recall that this appointment had me REALLY freaked out. Most kids with spina bifida have to be catheterized, and I was petrified that we were going to have to cath E. Fortunately, her test results were really good. The urologist (who we love) said that her sonogram looked "fantastic," her kidneys looked "great and were growing in size like they should be," and that she was doing so well that we don't have to see him again for six months. Thank God!!!!!!!!!
Y'all may remember that my good friend's daughters go to school with a young girl named Grace who also has spina bifida. I've been in contact with Grace's mom via e-mail and through phone calls, and she has been a great source of information for me. Ironically, they were checking in at the Spina Bifida Clinic in front of us on Tuesday, and we had the chance to sit and chat for an hour - she is always such a wealth of information. Plus, I got to see Grace in action and learn what the future may hold for E Bug. Grace has a very similar disease process as E, and it was amazing to see how phenomenally well she is doing. (She walks with only a slight limp, and we got to see her cool purple leg braces with hearts.) What a wonderful inspiration for E!!!
Yesterday E had her weekly physical therapy appointment, and she continues to do well. I had mentioned to the therapist that E seems to be getting bored laying down, but she's not quite steady enough to sit up on her own in a bumbo or exersaucer. So she brought over the best chair for E to sit in. It has a high back and is somewhat angled, and she's able to sit up by herself and feel like she's part of the action. She loves it!
Today was E's six month well visit with the pediatrician. As I mentioned earlier, she is finally gaining weight and the doctor thinks she will continue to do so. We are still balancing her constipation, but as of right now we are able to control it with juice and diet rather than medication. In other good news, E was able to feel a little bit of one of her vaccinations in her left upper thigh area. I hate that she was in pain, but I'm glad that she may have felt something as it's a good indication that her nerves may be working somewhat. We go back for another weight check in one month, so keep your fingers crossed that she keeps gaining weight!
Thanks so much for all your prayers for sweet Elizabug. They continue to work, and she continues to fabulously as a result!
